Meme shirts: inspiring creativity and uniting movements with new apparel technology

ABC Radio COVID T-Shirt Competition

23 Jun, 2023

Designing and shipping a T-shirt to a friend has united hundreds of Sydneysiders to customise mood-boosting ‘meme-shirts’ using new Print on Demand technology.  ABC Radio’s Sydney afternoon host, James Valentine, asked his audience to sum up the COVID lockdown in one T-shirt design and the listeners responded. Three of the best designs were selected and printed on a T -shirt and within just a few short hours, hundreds of T-shirt orders were printed and shipped.

Innovation

Australian Print House, Create Apparel based in Sydney, uses an innovative online design and dropship technology, which enables customers to design a unique T-shirt from anywhere in Australia to print, pack & ship on their behalf.  “Over the last 2 days, we’ve had more than 1,100 unique T-shirt orders generating $25,000 for the ABC to distribute to their chosen charity,” says Create Apparel founder, Mark Yammin. “The interesting thing about this new technology is that we are seeing spikes in demand when there are large-scale protests too, like the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2020 Armenian protests."

The 1960s and 1970s protest movement to create badges, t-shirts and slogans is being reborn again in the 2020s thanks to Australian access to fast drop-shipping t-shirt tech that allows speedy delivery, even in lockdown. “Our software platform provides the tools to build an online retail store and then be able to directly communicate with our digital printers that are housed in our factory in Auburn. The orders would come directly to our platform, and then our printers would print and we immediately ship to the customer. There are no minimum orders and the direct to garment printing is of the highest quality providing personalised t-shirts at an affordable price."

Dropshipping and on-demand production are a long term ecommerce trend helping small businesses eliminate the need to hold stock and reduce environmental waste. Create Apparrel also.  “Cloud-based T-shirt technology with printers based in Sydney means wearables don’t always have to be as high tech as smart watches or Facebook’s new smart glasses,” says Yammin “When you think about band t-shirts or even those 1990s hypercolour t-shirts you can see that people like to wear what matters-and with our new technology that not only allows people to ‘make&create’but also speeds the process up, you can create a meme that matters and have it being worn by someone within a very short period of time
